Soguero

Rawhide art

The rawhide braiding, precisely the art known as "soguería", is typical from Río de la Plata, spreaded through Argentina, Chile, Uruguay and southern Brasil. The gauchos (kind of pampa´s cowboy) started this braiding as a tool to domesticate horses. The name, soguería, derives from the early utilization of ropes (sogas) and knots used in the spanish ships, at first made of vegetal fibers. Soon the hide, product region´s strongly stablished cattle, took its place in countryside activities and ornament.

Nowadays, always near to countryside life, the job mantains its tradition, valuated by those who apreciate the product´s beautyness and quality, including the dedication that each piece implies. It´s common to complete some jobs with metals, specially silver, creating usefull and atractive contrasts. As a rawhide braider I have moved this pampean tradition to Junín de los Andes, in north Patagonia, where my shop is open and always well-disposed to receive you.
